Piran: Located in Slovenia, Piran is reputed as one of the most picturesque cities on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It has a population of approximately 4.000 people and is known throughout the continent for its rich cultural, historical and architectural heritage. Tartini Square is the city’s main landmark and its main feature is a statue of the renowned composer and violinist, Giuseppe Tartini, who was born in close proximity to the square. The Walls of Piran are part of the city’s defense walls are another well-known landmark. They date back to the 7th century and are amongst the best preserved fortifications in Europe.
Tenby: The walled seaside settlement of Tendy is one of Britain’s hidden gems. It is located in south Wales and has a population of about 4.500 people. Tendy’s sandy beaches and ancient structures have made it one of the continent’s most scenic tourist destinations. The Five Arches barbican gatehouse is arguably the town’s most renowned landmark. It is part of the 13th century fortification walls that encompass the settlement. St. Mary’s Church is also a highly notable local place of interest. It was built during the 15th century but has several architectural elements which date back to the 13th century. St. Mary’s has two fonts, one from the 15th century and one from the 19th century which is in the late Gothic style. Mellieħa: The village of Mellieħa is situated in the northwestern region of Malta and provides some of the most astonishing views of the Mediterranean Sea. It has a population of over 10.000 inhabitants and is home to numerous prominent Maltese landmarks. The Popeye Village is perhaps the most noted touristy attraction of the area. Also known as Sweethaven Village it was built as a film set for the 1980 live-action movie, Popeye, which starred Robin Williams and was produced by Walt Disney Productions and Paramount Pictures. Once the filming was over both studios decided that tearing down the settlement would be too expensive, so they left it behind and to the benefit of the Maltese touristic industry. Saint Agatha’s Tower is another highly popular local landmark. It was built by the Order of Saint John during the mid-15th century and is one of the best preserved watchtowers not only in Europe but the world.
